When it comes to health, plants really are our friends. The approach of nutritionists is evolving - it’s less about five fruits or vegetables a day and more about fitting in 30 or more different plants weekly. Research is increasingly showing that this dietary diversity can be huge news for our gut and metabolic health, which has a knock on impact on overall physical (and mental) wellbeing. Here’s how to get the most out of a plant-based diet.
A growing number of people are switching to a plant-forward diet, with The Vegan Society estimating 3% of the UK now identify as either vegan or plant-based. That’s two million people who have made the leap into this lifestyle and I’m happily one of them. I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact of being plant-based, feeling lighter and brighter ever since. And science is finally shining a light on the benefits of plants on our gut microbiome. But it’s so much deeper than fruit and vegetables. Let’s get into it.
Focus on delicious and nutritious wholefoods
The most nourishing vegan diets are rooted in wholefoods, focusing on foods in their natural state. They’re rich in organic fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, healthy fats, lentils, beans and lean proteins. And it involves consuming foods with little to no processing, refining or additives. It might sound a little hippy-dippy, but really it’s about stripping food back to basics. This way of eating has been linked to the prevention, management, and even reversal, of chronic diseases.
Work on stabilising your blood sugars
Plant-based diets are often associated with improved insulin sensitivity and reduced insulin resistance, although this depends on the quality of the diet. To maximise metabolic benefits, it helps to focus on whole, minimally processed foods, including fibre-rich vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Limiting highly refined carbohydrates and added sugars like white bread, sugary cereals, and heavily processed foods, can support more stable blood sugar levels. This means more stable energy levels and better overall metabolic health.
Change the order you eat your food in
You might think that filling your plate with healthy plant-based foods is all you need to focus on, but the order you actually eat your food in can completely transform your metabolic health. Eating high-fibre foods like vegetables and proteins like lentils or tofu before carbohydrates fundamentally changes how your body processes nutrients. Food sequencing lowers post-meal blood sugar spikes which can cause you to crash and crave. It’s a small adjustment which can completely change how you feel throughout the day.
A well-planned, healthy plant-based diet can be transformative for your wellbeing, but it’s still important to be mindful of key nutrients. Thoughtful supplementation, alongside a well-balanced, plant-diverse diet, can help fill any gaps and support your energy, hormones, and overall health.
